Writing has always been a big part of life for us. Charles’ mom, Dorothy, started his love for writing. Charles caught the bug from her.
Maybe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Mom, Dorothy Leonard, passed away in 2008. Although she had numerous poems and essays published in various publications, she never achieved her dream of having her writings published in a single volume. Charles inherited his Mom’s collection of hundreds of double-spaced, typewritten pages – yes, typewritten the old-fashioned way. These pages had been safely tucked away since Dorothy's death.
Johnna came across these pages when we were organizing some closets. She suggested we take her pages and turn them into a book. She scanned the original pages, organized the content, and designed the book as a gift to me. One thing she didn’t have to do was edit any of the writing. We wanted the words to be fully and completely Mom’s. The book, The Underneath Fold, is the fulfillment of her dream.
We've included a small sample of the collection below. We finished and published this book during the 2020 pandemic. A year no one will ever forget. Charles took up painting as a way to pass the time during stay-at-home orders and isolation. He decided to illustrate this book as a tribute to Mom as she has always been and always will be his heartbeat. The book is published on Amazon, and the cost covers printing and Amazon's fee, we don't make a profit. The book is Mom's words published for others to enjoy, and for us, that is priceless.
We hope this book makes you smile and laugh. Most importantly,
may it bring to mind someone from your past that may be whispering something only you needed to hear.
The Underneath Fold is a compilation of the works of Dorothy Leonard, Charles' Mom. Mom wrote her entire life. Writing gave her strength, gave her peace, gave her hope. Words were her medium of choice, and a simple piece of paper, her canvas.
